Description
The Brunswick-Balke-Collender Company, a manufacturer of supplies for cue sports like billiards and snooker, commissioned this factory complex in 1905. The American enterprise was the world’s largest producer of billiard tables and equipment, and this factory was its first international facility. The complex comprises the original factory building, two additions, and a separate boiler house with a smokestack. Henry Simpson, a Toronto architect who was responsible for several significant buildings in the King and Dufferin industrial area, designed the original building at the corner of Snooker Street and Hanna Avenue. He also created a complementary addition in 1907 and the boiler house in 1912. Local architect J.L. Havill completed the 1913 addition. The cue sports manufacturer occupied the premises for more than 50 years. The complex remains a local landmark in the Liberty Village neighbourhood, distinguished by its scale, impressive brick smokestack, yellow brickwork, and boiler house.
