Alberta Room Brands Heritage Property Plaque, 2020.
Description
The walls of the Alberta Room were once lined with leather panels marked with cattle brands from Alberta ranches. Originally, nearly 300 brands were displayed in this space. The brands acted as proof of ownership of ranch animals, particularly cattle that were sent to graze in the mountains in the spring. They also held symbolic meaning for ranch families. Brands often consisted of family initials or symbols that could be used for generations. With the arrival of modern methods of identifying ranch animals, such brands are becoming increasingly rare. In 1919, the future King Edward VIII purchased a ranch in Alberta, known as the Prince of Wales Ranch or the E. P. Ranch. His brand is above and to the right of the Alberta crest.
