Alberta Room Heritage Property Plaque, 2020.
Description
The Alberta Room contains a 119-square-foot (11-square-metre) mural by Scottish-Canadian artist Adam Sherriff Scott (1887–1980). Completed in 1958, the painting depicts the Bow River Valley and the Banff Springs Golf Course in Banff, Alberta, located in the Rocky Mountains. Sherriff Scott spent three years in Calgary painting landscapes of the Canadian West and portraits of its inhabitants. The horizontal panels, attributed to non-Indigenous artist Arthur Price, depict scenes from the lives of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot), a group consisting of the Kainai, Piikani, and Siksika Nations whose traditional territory lies in Southern Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Northern Montana. The panels show boldly decorated tipis, traditional dances, and everyday life. A group of Calgary residents, including ranchers, developed the original design of the Alberta Room.
