Description

Leonard Braithwaite was the first Black Canadian to be elected as a member of Provincial Parliament (MPP). In his first speech to the Ontario Legislature on February 4, 1964 he spoke out against racial segregation in Ontario schools. The 114 year practice was finally put to an end one month after his speech. He worked as an MPP in the Liberal party from 1963-175 and continued to use his political career to advocate for racial and gender equality.
